This week (7th-11th October) is National #worklifeweek, so with this topic very close to our own hearts, we wanted to get involved in the conversation.
So many of our clients in the emergency services come to us at their wits end; out of patience, totally exhausted and depleted of confidence. Why? Because they are finding themselves without a reasonable work-life balance. They are spending more and more hours at work and seeing their families less and less. They are having to say no to social events due to work commitments and when they do get those precious days off, they have no energy to look for a solution to the problem and so carry on towards a guaranteed burnout. We know the process - we've been there ourselves! And we know it's not just as easy as saying you'll make more time for exercise, or you'll try to give yourself one day a month of 'you time'. Sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture.
This might sound a little bleak for a Monday morning, but we're here to tell you that it doesn't have to be like that. Our clients come to us after months, even years of deliberation and plucking up the courage to make a leap into the unknown. Most of our clients joined the emergency services for the same reason - wanting to help others and the huge sense of satisfaction that brings - but after years and years of being driven into the ground and putting others first, the cons begin to outweigh the pros and it becomes an unrealistic way of living day-to-day. It's not selfish to want to spend more time with your family, or to want a shorter commute and it's not selfish to want regular working hours for the same salary, or be able to book a holiday without it being cancelled. It seems like most other people get these 'perks', so why shouldn't they, too?
So when the time comes to reassess your career, we'll be here to help! We can help you evaluate your various career options, work out what you might be interested in doing, pinpoint your transferable skills and most importantly, build up your confidence. So next time you find yourself on the wrong side of the work-life balance scales, get in touch with us!
